What Is
Wellbeing Coaching?

Here at Raw Horizons Academy we specialise in Wellbeing Coaching. How is this different from regular Life Coaching?

Firstly, what is wellbeing? Wellbeing can be defined as health, happiness and success. However these terms are very subjective in their meaning and have a different truth for every person.

A more objective definition is that overall wellbeing is a state in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community (The World Health Organisation).

Over the last 50 years, we in Britain have become richer. Despite this, evidence show that the UK is facing a mental health challenge in the work place (The Stevenson/Farmer Review).

More and more people are trying to deal with stress, low energy, overwhelm, work-life balance and self-doubt. This takes it toll on their emotional wellbeing both in the workplace and the home environment.

They found that poor mental health costs employers between £33 billion and £42 billion a year with around 50% being due to presenteeism (loss of productivity due to working when one is actually unwell).

The review concluded that if employers can create a positive and supportive workplace culture these cost impacts of mental wellbeing issues can be significantly reduced.

The recommendations to achieve this include:

  • Produce, implement and communicate a mental health at work plan;
  • Develop mental health awareness among employees;
  • Encourage open conversations about mental health and the support available when employees are struggling;
  • Provide employees with good working conditions and ensure they have a healthy work life balance and opportunities for development;
  • Promote effective people management through line managers and supervisors;
  • Routinely monitor employee mental health and wellbeing.

Enter the role of the Wellbeing Coach: to re-motivate, re-inspire, re-energise and help people get their wellness back on track and more positive with life.

Using methods and techniques that Dr Claire Maguire herself used to regain her own self-confidence, re-set her goals and recover from low mental wellbeing after her trauma with breast cancer, she developed her own proprietary program for wellbeing coaching.

Together with working with hundreds of people through her successful private wellness and wellbeing coaching practice plus her flourishing residential retreat programs, she has refined her coaching techniques and skills into her unique Wellbeing Coach Training Course.

Based on the same underlying foundations as Life Coaching, a wellbeing coach is there to guide his or her people to bring about a clearer understanding of their physical wellness and emotional wellbeing issues or concerns, help to reframe and re-interpret, look forward to their aspirations and the goals they wish to achieve, and inspire the necessary changes in their behaviour to ensure the realisation of those objectives and desires.

By skilfully listening, questioning, reflecting, encouraging, challenging and supporting, a wellbeing coach guides them to look to the future by helping them design and execute their own solutions to their problems and challenges.

By ensuring an organisation has a trained Wellbeing Coach available for their staff, employers will be creating a supportive, positive and productive work space, hence benefiting all involved.
